Lung Checkup
Lung cancer is the fifth leading cause of death among Mexicans.
Spirometry
Lung cancer is tested with the use of a spirometer which measures air flow. By measuring the amount of air exhaled and the speed of breathing, a wide range of lung diseases can be detected.
In a spirometry test one is seated while breathing into a mouthpiece that is connected to an instrument called a spirometer which records the amount and frequency of inhaled and exhaled air over a period of time.
Lung volume measurement can be done in two ways:
Plethysmography is the most accurate. The patient sits in a closed transparent box that looks like a phone booth. The technician asks you to inhale and exhale in one nozzle. Pressure changes inside the case help determine pulmonary volume.
Lung volume can also be measured when you breathe helium or nitrogen gas through a tube for a certain period of time. The gas concentration is measured in a camera attached to tube to calculate lung volume.
Exam preparation
Do not eat heavy meals before the exam.
Don’t smoke for four to six hours before the exam. You may need to inhale medicine before or during the exam.
